The Government has announced updates on the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) to take effect from 1st April 2024.

From 1st April 2024, employees aged 21 and over will now be entitled to the National Living Wage, which is previously set at aged 23 and over to qualify.

The rates which will apply from 1 April 2024 are as follows:

  • National Living Wage (21 and Over) - £11.44 an hour, this is up from £10.42, a 9.8% increase.
  • 18 to 20 Year Old Rate - £8.60 an hour, this is up from £7.49, a 14.8% increase.
  • 16 to 17 Year Old Rate - £6.40 an hour, this is up from £5.28, a 21.2% increase.
  • Apprentice Rate - £6.40 an hour, this is up from £5.28, a 21.2% increase.

The government says '' the 2024 increase means it has reached its long-term goal to make the National Living Wage equal to two-thirds of median hourly pay for those aged 21 and over. ''

It is a criminal offence if employers fail to pay the correct National Minimum and Living Wages to their staff.
